MINATEC Upstream Research

Invited speakers of the UPSTREAM Research event co-organised by FMNT, INAC and the NanoScience Foundation will provide deep insights into the role of basic research in the fields of materials and nanotechnologies. Experts from FMNT and INAC will share some of the major technical and scientific results obtained by their teams in 2009.
By participating to UPSTREAM Research, you will get a broad vision of the fascinating nanoworld challenges addressed by the scientific community in the next decade. One of the most difficult challenges is to deliver materials with controlled and desired properties. They must exhibit the potential to enable high density emerging research devices, lithographic technologies, and interconnect fabrication and operation at the nanometer scale, and open new opportunities of applications in nanoelectronics and in the field of renewable energies or life sciences. This challenge requires not only the knowledge and understanding of the properties of nano-objects like carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanowires, or quantum dots, but also the control of their implementation and assembly in nanostructures, in accurate locations to be able to develop new smart devices. On all these concerns, the numerical simulation proves to be an unavoidable necessity.
By involving biotechnology and incorporating metals and ceramics as well in the creation of new materials, innovative boundary and interdisciplinary regions are created. A review of some of the high-lights obtained in those fields which use nano-technologies by integrating various types of materials will be given.
A workshop of the European funded project AFSID (Advanced Functionalized Si Devices : http://www.afsid.eu/) covering recent advances in single dopant and single electron effects in silicon nanodevices will be held in the first part of UPSTREAM Research.
