Implementation of state of the art nano-Auger electron spectroscopy and application for chemical characterization of advanced nano-devices

The LETI Institute (French Atomic Authority, Technological Research Division, Grenoble) in collaboration with the Lavoisier Institute (CNRS, Paris/Versailles), proposes a one year post-doc position (renewable for one year) to implement Auger electron spectroscopy and imaging and apply it to nanostructures for microelectronics applications.
Both LETI and Lavoisier Institute have engaged a collaboration dealing with the implementation of state of the art Auger nano-probes in their respective laboratory for chemical characterizations of innovative materials and devices at the nanometric scale. The post-doctoral fellow will help both institutes to develop specific protocols in order to reach optimal performances in terms of lateral and depth resolutions.
The work-plan will require the post-doc to spend half of the time at the Lavoisier Institute and half of the time at LETI (Minatec Nanocharacterization Platform) in Grenoble. The candidate will benefit from a full scientific and technological support from both laboratories, with access to complementary techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and –spectromicroscopy (XPEEM) as well as STEM coupled with EDX or EELS.
The work plan is divided into two main items:
- i) Use of the Auger nano-probe that is currently being installed at the Lavoisier Institute for microelectronics applications. The work will consist in selecting appropriate samples that will serve as references and in developing protocols to reach optimized lateral and depth resolutions. Complex issues such as beam damage, impact of the topography and cross-section analysis will be addressed.

- ii) Transfer and use of such protocols on the LETI equipment for the characterization of innovative nano-structures such as integrated devices with complex 3D architectures. The candidate is expected to identify and prepare the best specimens to highlight the benefits of the technique. Results will be compared to other complementary techniques (XPS, XPEEM, TEM-EELS). The candidate will be integrated in the Minatec Nanocharacterization Platform with a wide range of complementary characterization techniques. He (she) will benefit from partnerships with industrials and academic laboratories in order to favour professional integration.

The candidate should have a solid grounding in semiconductor physics and material science. A good experience in physico-chemical characterizations such as electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy or photoemission spectroscopy is a big advantage. French or good English speaking will be an asset. The envisaged start date is January 2010.

Development of bonding and liquid encapsulation processes for the fabrication of advanced MEMS

Internship background:
The camera modules « high resolution » (beyond 1.3Mpxels) integrated in the mobile phones are currently gaining performance without compromising on size and cost. While advanced functions such as optical autofocus or zoom have existed for a long time in digital cameras, these functions are harder to integrate in camera modules for mobile phones because of the size, power consumption and cost constraints.
In order to answer this need, CEA-LETI proposes an approach based on the expertise obtained in the Micro-systems (MEMS) field. The foreseen solution is a variable-focus optical device based on a liquid lens actuated by MEMS. The periphery of a flexible membrane is pushed in order to induce liquid transfers towards the center of the membrane and thus change the lens shape and the associated focal length.
This new technology necessitates in particular controlling innovating materials such as extremely flexible membranes (very low elastic modulus) which are optically transparent with very low permeability and are compatible with the processes used in the micro-systems technologies. The control of optical liquids, with low viscosity, high permittivity and temperature stability compatible with the requested functioning range is also required. In particular, the fabrication of a hermetic and non-permeable cavity filled with the desired liquid without bubbles is required for the achievement of the project.
The objective of the internship is to develop the processes necessary for the creation of the cavities, the bonding of the membranes on these cavities, and of the filling of the cavities with the liquid. It will take place in the Packaging and Integration Technologies Lab (LTPI) of the Integration of Heterogeneous Components Department (DIHS) in CEA-LETI. The technological steps will be performed in CEA-LETI clean rooms. The trainee will use the technological platform of the BHT (High technologies building), and will have access to the CEA-LETI characterization tools. Candidates need a good knowledge of physics, material sciences, and of the clean room techniques

Job requirements:
The objectives of the internship are to:
- Develop the techniques necessary for the fabrication of cavities using adhesive materials on glass. The trainee will study the possibility to use photo-sensitive negative resists or screen printed adhesive materials.
- Develop the techniques necessary for the bonding of the flexible membrane on the cavity (filled with liquid or not)
- Optimize the filling of the liquid in the cavities: by dispensing the liquid before bonding or by filling the liquid after bonding using holes created before.
- Integrate the steps described previously in an optical device with electrostatic actuation in order to evaluate the performance of the device

Fully-Depleted SOI design for low power embeded SRAM circuits

CEA-LETI, the Laboratory for Electronics & Information Technology has a considerable investment in personnel (staff is approximately 1200 people, among whom 850 CEA employees), know-how and equipment. LETI is one of the largest applied research laboratories in Europe. The main activities of LETI are dealing with electronics, microelectronics, microsystems, and optoelectronics. LETI mainly aims at helping industrial partners to improve their competitiveness through technological innovation in the field of electronics and microelectronics. LETI has also an active patent policy (more than 100 new patents per year). Inside the Circuits and Systems Design (DCIS) Department, the ASIC design team (SCME, Service Conception pour les Microtechnologies Emergentes) is more than 80 people composed of engineers and PhD students. Main activities are related to digital-, RF- , analog- design, devices modelling and characterisation, IC tests, and layout. Low power design is one of the strong activities, covering SOI technology design, power management, low-power architectures.

Context:

The great success of the microelectronic in the past decades is mainly due to geometrical scaling of IC dimensions, thus bringing down the cost per transistor for every new technology node (Moore’s Law). In the deca-nanometer range, physical parasitic elements lead to scaling limitations which decrease the circuit performance gains for the new generation nodes. Thanks to an excellent electrostatic control of the channel and the low parasitic capacitances, FDSOI technology appears to be an excellent candidate for the future generation of processors in order to preserve the scaling law.

Work description:

The aim of the proposed work is to evaluate the benefits of FDSOI technology for designing SRAM memory circuits in 32nm. The study will address area, power dissipation and speed improvement compared with BULK technology. First, the trainee will work at the design level of elementary cells (memory cell, sense amplifier…). Second a prospective study will address area and performances gain of a full SRAM cut. The various steps of this study include the following:

Profil du candidat :
